The TACAN Antenna is the highest antenna on the ship. In 1979, the dome
motor burned up which means TACAN is down. The antenna is normally
repaired/replaced in the ship yards, but we were soon to be en-route to Iran
in support of rescuing the 51 hostages. Therefore we had to replace the
antenna at sea. The antenna weighs over 900lbs therefore a Crane was
needed to replace the antenna. A crane was lifted from a barge to the
flight-deck and then setup to access the TACAN Antenna. This has never
been done before. The following pictures illustrate how some of this was
accomplished.
