Ray started his baseball career in 1940 as an outfielder
and first base player. He hit .322 for Tarboro in 1941
and spent the next 4 years in the service (1942-1945).
His first Big League trial was with the Indians in 1948
and went to the World Series that year. He went to the
A's in 1951.
