So, what happens when you die? The Universalists says that
we all ultimately end up in a utopia heaven. The Atheist says
that there is no afterlife. The Agnostic says that if there is a
God we cannot know him or God is unknowable. Many other
cults or sects have their opinion as well on the topic, “what
happens when you die?”

This is a topic where we cannot afford to be wrong. Therefore I base my answer on the One who has
been there and back, and has talked about it. In God’s Word, Jesus spoke of both heaven and hell. And
since He has been there and back, I base my answer to this question on Him and His Word.
The Bible, God, and Jesus make it clear that there is an afterlife. If there is no heaven or hell, then
God, Jesus, and the Word is a lie and are not trustworthy; since all three talks about heaven and hell. So to
say that there is no hell, or no heaven, makes the Word and God a lie. If you believe in one, you must
believe in all three (God, Jesus, and the Word).
Therefore, if we believe that God, Jesus, and the Word are true, then we must consider what the say on
the topic of the afterlife. Jesus gives a parable on this very topic in Luke 16. It is to be noted that this is
the only parable that Jesus gives where he actually uses people names, Lazarus.and Abraham.
Luke 16:19-26. “There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and
fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at
this gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s
table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and
was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried. And in
hell he lifted up hi eyes, being in torments. And seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his
bosom. And he cried and said Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may
dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame. But
Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise
Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, ant thou are tormented. And besides all this,
between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to your
cannot: neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.”
Jesus is not illustrating that rich men go to hell and the poor go to heaven, but that there is a heaven and a
hell; one place provides comfort and the other, torment. Jesus in many places talks about heaven and hell.
Likewise, so does Paul and John, who are the only other people in the New Testament that have seen
heaven and wrote about it. Again, God, Jesus, and the Word all give a description about the afterlife. This
is one topic you cannot afford to be wrong on.
So who goes to heaven? Again, if the Bible is trustworthy, Jesus is trustworthy, and God is
trustworthy, we must consider what they say is trustworthy. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the
life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” Jn. 14:6. And since God resides in heaven, and since the
Bible is trustworthy, we must conclude that the only way to heaven is through Jesus. Then the next
question is, “how do we go through Jesus”? Answer, by confessing that we are not perfect; we are
sinners, confessing that Jesus died for our sins as the scriptures say, calling upon the name of the Lord,
and inviting Him into our heart, we shall be saved. (Read the Romans Road). Jesus will hear you and sup
with you. Now finally you will have peace of heart. The world may make life a little difficult for a season.
But be of good cheer. God has overcome the world. And nothing will separate us from the Love of God.

For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him
should not perish, but have everlasting life. Jn. 3:16
Who goes to hell? It is those that reject the truth. The flip side of Jn.3:16 (above) is Jn. 3:18, “He
that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath
not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
Jesus preached about hell more than heaven. He did everything He could to keep us from going there,
including dying on the cross for us. He laid down his life for us, which there is no greater love than this.
So, who is going to be in hell? Answer; the righteous, sinners, preachers, church goers, criminals, and
any other class of people who rejected the free gift of salvation through Christ Jesus. That is, our works,
church affiliations, and good intentions will not get us to heaven. Only Jesus – He is the way, truth, and
life. I didn’t make the rules, He did. Remember, God is “not willing that any should perish, but that all
should come to repentance.” II Pet. 3:9.
God’s Word is clear that after we die, then we face judgment (Heb. 9:27). For the saved, it is the
judgment of rewards, righteousness and accountability. For the unsaved, it is the judgment of hell where
everyone that rejected the free gift of God, will live in eternity of torment, separated from the love of God,
all the while, knowing that it did not have to be this way.
My friend, please don’t make this choice. While you are alive on earth, you can choose Jesus. But after
you die, all bets are off, game over, no second chances. The day you hear Jesus calling you, please don’t
hesitate, for today may be the last time the offer is made.
